In 1524, Augustin Grimaldi, lifelong lord of Monaco and bishop of Grasse, chose to place his territory, strategically positioned on the map of Europe, under the protection of Emperor Charles V, King of Spain. This alliance, a crucial step in the emergence of Monegasque sovereignty, was formalized by two successive treaties, signed in Burgos on June 7 and in Tordesillas on November 15.
